Tuesday, March 5, 2013

The Board of Councilors of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania appointed Dr. Page Talbott as interim president of the Society effective April 1, following the departure of President and CEO Kim Sajet.

Sajet, who has served as president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) since 2007, has been appointed director of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. Board Chair Bruce K. Fenton said: “The Councilors congratulate Kim on the tremendous honor of being chosen as director of the National Portrait Gallery. We have immense respect for Kim as a leader and are proud of her contributions at the Society and in the cultural community.”

Dr. Talbott has served as a member of the Board of Councilors of HSP for 16 years, including two terms as chair of the Collections and Programs Committee and as a member of the Executive Committee. She will be taking a leave of absence from the Board during her term as interim president.

“We are fortunate that Dr. Talbott has agreed to serve as interim president,” Fenton said. “She is a proven leader and strategic planner and understands our history and our goals. She brings enthusiasm, continuity, and experience during this transitional period.”

Dr. Talbott is a principal at Remer & Talbott, a consulting firm based in Philadelphia providing organizational, exhibition, and interpretive planning services to the cultural community. A decorative arts historian by training, Dr. Talbott has been a curator and planner for museums, historical societies, and historic house museums for nearly forty years, specializing in creating innovative exhibitions, writing interpretive and furnishings plans for historic sites, and assisting small and mid-size organizations with strategic planning and organizational development. Dr. Talbott has been an HSP board member since 1996 and currently serves as chair of the Collections and Programs Committee. Dr. Talbott holds a B.A. from Wellesley College, an M.A. from the University of Delaware/Winterthur Program in American Material Culture, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania.

“It’s a privilege to assume the interim presidency following Kim Sajet’s outstanding leadership and my many years as a board member at HSP,” Dr. Talbott said. “I am particularly excited to work with the excellent staff during the next few months as HSP undergoes renovations to expand collection storage, upgrade security, and transform our public spaces.”

At a meeting March 4, the Society’s Board of Councilors appointed Dr. Talbott as interim president and designated a committee to begin the search for a permanent president.
