On the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, HSP will display the highlights of its war-related documents, including papers from army officers, war posters, photographs of home front activities, and letters describing wartime civilian life.

Lecture/Panel Discussion

When the Civil War began, Emilie Davis , a twenty four year old free African American woman, was attending school and sewing clothes to support herself.  In her diaries, Emilie wrote short daily entries recounting events, both big and small.  Mixed in with the minutiae of Emilie’s everyday life are entries recounting African Americans’ celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation, nervous excitement during the battle of Gettysburg, and their collective mourning of President Lincoln.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania is proud to be a National Audience Partner with the Smithsonian for Anthem for America. To give Philadelphia a leading voice in the “Song Heard Round the World”, the U.S. Army Voices will be leading group-sing of the national anthem at 4:00pm on Saturday, June 14, 2014, on the front lawn of the National Constitution Center.

In commemoration of Flag Day and the bicentennial of the Star-Spangled Banner, HSP will display collection highlights relating to both of our national standards: the anthem and flag. This includes Key’s handwritten copy of the Star-Spangled Banner, one of only three in existence.

HSP honored presidential historian and best-selling author Michael Beschloss with the Founder’s Award at its annual gala at The Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia.

The Pythians black baseball team in Philadelphia had its first full season here in Philadelphia in 1867. The Pythians' story is about more than just baseball. Their games spawned social gatherings where players and their supporters discussed segregation and voting rights.
