Genetic Genealogy and the Future of Family History

Family historians are gaining a powerful new tool with the increasing use of DNA testing to trace genetic origins. Unlike paper-based records and the libraries that collect them, our DNA is perfectly preserved and easily accessible. Brick wall research problems caused by a scant documentary record can often be solved by sending a cheek swab and a check to one of the many companies now specializing in genetic genealogy.

Though much has been made of this potential of DNA testing to revolutionize how we research our family history, how does it work? What can it reveal about our family? How does it complement traditional types of research?

Join HSP and genealogist Judy Russell to explore  the three major test types - YDNA, mitochondrial (mtDNA) and the newest autosomal DNA testing - and see what each offers to the genealogist.

The Legal Genealogist’s Judy G. Russell is a genealogist with a law degree who writes and lectures on topics ranging from using court records to understanding DNA tests. On the faculty of IGHR, GRIP and SLIG, she is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, from which she holds credentials as a Certified Genealogist and Certified Genealogical Lecturer.
