The story of Pennsylvania is inextricably linked to the history of energy—from the forests and waters of Penn Woods, to the anthracite and bituminous coal fields of the northeast and southwest corners of the state, up to the natural gas trapped in the state’s Marcellus Shale formation. Throughout its history, Pennsylvania has fueled the nation.

The latest special issue of The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography (PMHB) explores these legacies of energy production and extraction in the Commonwealth, bringing together articles examining the history of several energy sources, including coal, oil, electricity, and natural gas.

From Nov. 16 through Nov. 23, the new issue of PMHB will be freely available to read. Click here to start exploring the issue.

The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, HSP's scholarly magazine published since 1877, is one of the country's most prestigious state historical journals. PMHB is a benefit of membership and is also available to individual and institutional subscribers in print and digital formats.

Online access to the full run of PMHB, from 1877 to the present, is available on JSTOR to subscribers and to upper-level HSP members. Visit hsp.org/publications for more information.

Beginning this year, PMHB has moved to a new schedule. The journal will now be published three times per year – in January, April, and October – allowing PMHB staff to produce a special topical issue each year.
