Workshop Sites

Cultures of Independence will be held in both the Old City and Center City sections of Philadelphia.  Independence Hall is located on Chestnut Street between 5th and 6th Street, and the base-site for the workshop will be the National Constitution Center on Arch Street, also between 5th and 6th Streets. Some days (see Schedule), participants will tour or research in other historical institutions.  

No transportation will be provided between sites.  Buses and taxis do offer modes of vehicle transport between sites.  Participants will be provided maps and walking tour options.

Lodging

Workshop participants may book rooms at a discounted price of $159.00 (plus 15.5% tax) a night at the Wyndham Hotel in Old City, only a block off of Independence Mall.  The Wyndham offers complimentary wifi access and a fitness center.  Participants are responsible for making their own reservations by May 22, 2015.

Single and double rooms are available.  The maximum number of guests permitted in a King Bedded room is three (3) and in a Double Bedded room is four (4).

To make a reservation, call 1-877-999-3223.  To receive the contract rates, the attendees should identify themselves as part of the NCC Teacher Institutes group.  Rooms must be guaranteed to an individual’s credit card or by advance deposit. No-shows will be charged the first night’s room and tax. Any room cancellations that occur less than seventy-two (72 hours) prior to the scheduled arrival date will result in a penalty of one night’s room and tax to be charged to the credit card on the reservation. Departures prior to scheduled departure date will be subject to an early departure fee of one night’s room and tax.

Indoor garage parking is available adjacent to the hotel at current published rates of $30.00 plus 20% city tax.  All parking rates are subject to change. Parking spaces are based upon availability. Vans/ Vehicles over the height of 6’6” will need to find alternative parking.

Food

You will be responsible for your meals, with a few exceptions noted in the Schedule.

Stipend

Teachers selected to participate as NEH Summer Scholars will receive a stipend of $1,200 at the end of the residential workshop session to offset transportation, room and board. Summer Scholars are required to attend all scheduled meetings and to engage fully as professionals in all project activities. Participants who do not complete the full tenure of the project will receive a reduced stipend.

Getting to Philadelphia

Philadelphia is located along I95 for easy car travel.  It is also served by air and train.  Details will be provided for selected participants.
