Asylum Company papers (Collection 0021), 1786-1851, 0.8 linear feet
The Asylum Company was founded in 1794 by Robert Morris, John Nicholson, and others, to develop or sell lands that they had already acquired in Luzerne, Northampton, and Northumberland counties. French émigrés, founders of Azilum on the North Branch of the Susquehanna River, near present Towanda, were among their first customers. The collection containsa draft map for lands in Bedford County, 1793; deeds, primarily for lands in Northumberland County; correspondence, accounts, receipts, and contracts of Samuel Baird; accounts with and correspondence with shareholders; copies of memorials presented by John Astley; and miscellaneous letters, accounts, title papers, and shares of stock in the company.
