Don't Forget the Ladies

Female ancestors are often the keepers of family traditions, heirlooms, photographs, memories, and records. Finding and identifying them, however, can be difficult since women can lose their surname and property through marriage. In this workshop recorded at HSP on September 17, 2013, Nancy C. Nelson and Carol M. Sheaffer shared tips and advice to help you identify your female ancestors and their family of origin.

John Bartram was one of the earliest botanists and naturalists in North America.

Stories From the Archives: Early Pennsylvania Politics

Whereas modern politics is filled with transparent rhetoric, politics of early colonial America was much more opaque. Director of Research Services David Haugaard discusses letters from the late 17th and early 18th centuries that give a glimpse into early political life in Pennsylvania. For more information, please visit the Digital Library. Stories From the Archives is a video series in which an HSP staff member highlights one of his or her favorite items from the collection.

Family Legacies: Genealogical Resources for Chinese Americans

Jeanie Chooey Low, author of China Connection: Finding Ancestral Roots for Chinese in America, discussed techniques for interviewing family members and deciphering gravestone inscriptions. She also looked at U.S. 20th-century immigration and naturalization case files, how to find and visit ancestral villages, and how to research war and census records.
