Life as a Prisoner of War
Separate from the peril on the front lines, Prisoners of War faced a very different yet just as dangerous battle. Conditions in prison camps were atrocious and claimed perhaps as many as 56,000 men. Overcrowded and short on supplies, many prisoners preferred the horrors of the battlefield rather than the horrors of starvation and disease. Experiences left such an imprint that many recorded their time served either during incarceration or years afterward.
