Community Building: What Does "Starting Over" Look Like

What does starting over look like? For many new immigrants, it means finding kinship in a new nation. Ethnic unions, commercial associations, and community publications all reach out and create connections where there were none. They maintain cultural identity through family-focused networks and organizations designed to celebrate and uplift one another in foreign, unfamiliar places.

Many of these organizations provide health care, education and disability benefits, and worked towards bettering the quality of life for their community’s constituencies. Pennsylvania and Philadelphia’s immigrant communities have a rich history of creating something out of nothing and setting foundations for future generations to come.
