Songs that were originally written for minstrel shows, such as Stephen C. Foster’s “Oh! Susanna” and “Camptown Races,” continue to be popular today. Born in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania, in 1826, Foster was one of the best-known American composers of the nineteenth century.
