Fox was a founder of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakerism. Quaker men’s refusal to take their hats off and bow to anyone, regardless of rank/title, was often interpreted as a sign of disrespect, so Paxton supporters would use broad-brimmed hats to distinguish Quakers in their political cartoons.
