Actions Involving Fugitive Slaves

John Letnum. Philadelphia. 1786

"Negro John Letnum who had been committed...on a charge...of being a Runaway...was discharged..."

Captain Hunt v. Frank Antonio. Philadelphia. 1797

A Philadelphia court declares that Captain Hunt, a shipmaster, is not legally bound to assist Antonio after releasing him from indenture; the same would apply, the court declares, if the indentured man had been a slave.

Colonel Dennis v. James Fox. Greene County, NY. 1822.

A court interrogates several individuals in an effort to determine whether James Fox is free or a fugitive slave.
