Sheila Connolly is currently the author of two mystery series, the Orchard Mysteries and the Museum Mysteries, and she will soon be introducing the County Cork Mysteries set in Ireland. She is also a former staff member at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Connolly will lead a lively discussion about how real events and people inspired her first Museum Mystery novel Fundraising the Dead, which is set at the fictional Society for the Preservation of Pennsylvania Antiquities.

Join us for a lively debate between two historians who take opposing views on the need for thrift in America today. Princeton historian Sheldon Garon, author of Beyond Our Means: Why America Spends While the World Saves, and Rutgers historian James Livingston, author of Against Thrift: Why Consumer Culture Is Good for the Economy, the Environment and Your Soul, will argue their respective cases for and against thrift.

This summer marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.  Labeled as “Mr. Madison’s War,” this conflict ultimately helped to form policy and promote national self confidence. HSP will host a one day document display that includes letters, maps, diaries, and prints from both the American and British sides, including a copy of the "Star-Spangled Banner" handwritten by Francis Scott Key.

Join us for an authentic Civil War era dinner based on recipes from the 19th century cookbook by Ellen M. Emlen. The event will take place in the Founder’s Hall at the Union League of Philadelphia, and include discussion and commentary by Chef Martin during each of the four courses. Period music from HSP’s collection will accompany your dinner, and the original cookbook will be on display for the event.  Attendees will also receive a copy of the cookbook.
