One hundred years ago the Titanic sunk to the astonishment of the world. On this anniversary we are taking a moment to honor and recognize two Philadelphia passengers, R. Norris Williams II and Harry Elkins Widener. One survived and one perished but both made an impact on the intellectual legacy of rare books and manuscripts in America.

We will read passages from R. Norris Williams II’s account of his experience as a survivor. He returned to Philadelphia and later became the director of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and a world tennis champion. We will also share part of the correspondence between London book dealer Bernard Quaritch, survivor Eleanor Widener, and Dr. Rosenbach concerning the death of young Harry Widener and the subsequent building of the Widener Rare Book Library at Harvard University.

Free for Rosenbach and HSP members! Included in general admission. RSVP to rsvp@rosenbach.org or (215) 732-1600 ext. 123.
