Thrift Curriculum Contest Winners Named

2013-07-30 12:57

During the Creating Thrift Curriculum Teacher Institute in July, 2013, the winners of the Teaching Thrift Curriculum Development Contest were honored. Both winners created lessons that introduced students to the history of the thrift movement and then helped them apply its concepts to their lives today.

Grand Prize winner was Arlene Haigh (on right) who teaches business technology education at South Mountain Middle School in Allentown PA.  Her lesson demonstrated for students how to be industrious and thrifty in their use of eBay.  The Runner Up prize went to Susan Condor (on left), who is a Medical Office Instructor for the Lawrence County Vocational Technical School in PA.  Condor's lesson helped students in her school be frugal and thrifty as they planned for their prom.

Besides the facsimile of the Thrift Rally Song presented above, the winners received cash prizes and an all-expense paid trip to participate in the Teacher Institute. The Curriculum Contest was funded by John and Josephine Templeton.  Winners were selected by a judge panel comprising staff from HSP, the Institute for American Values, and Sally Flaherty of the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
