Suzanne L. Gilliotte Blumenthal papers (Collection 3704), circa 1885-circa 1997, 15 linear feet

Suzanne Gilliotte Blumenthal (died 2000) was born in France and was educated mostly in Europe, though, later in life, she received a master's degree in romance languages and literature from the University of Pennsylvania.  In the 1930s, she traveled to the United States and met Arthur J. Blumenthal, whom she would later marry.  During the 1930s and 1940s, Blumenthal became a prolific artist – she worked mainly in painting, sculpture, and ceramics.  She received a Barnes Foundation fellowship and subsequently studied art in Germany, France, and England. From the 1950s to the 1980s, she taught at Beaver College, the University of Pennsylvania, and Wilson College, specializing in French and French literature.

This collection contains a mix of Blumenthal's personal and professional papers. There is assorted correspondence, including letters to and from the Barnes Foundation; photographs; photo albums; scrapbooks; class notes; teaching materials and course work; her own writings; newspapers; original art; and ephemera.
