The Ephrata religious community was founded by Conrad Beissel in 1732. Ephrata was known for its printing press and its music—and for combining the two into beautiful illuminated hymnals. This document display includes manuscripts and hymn books from the Ephrata Cloister, a rare diary of German mystic Johannes Kelpius, and beautiful examples of Pennsylvania German folk art and fraktur.
