Genealogy Workshop

Google Earth is only one example of geographic information available online. The internet contains several projects featuring spatial and historical data which can assist with genealogical research.

Focusing on African American sample sets, this workshop highlights the wonders of maps and G.I.S. (Geographical Information Systems) for genealogists researching African American ancestors. Led by genealogist Shamele Jordan, this workshop explores mobile apps, online projects, and map collections which provide land ownership and historical details overlaid on current maps. Google MyMaps, the latest in Google's mapping suite, will also be discussed.

This workshop is for beginners and experienced genealogists alike!

Speaker's Bio: Shamele Jordon is an active genealogist, lecturer, writer, and podcaster (Genealogy on Demand). Her biographical highlights include:

  • Researcher for the PBS series Oprah’s Roots: African American Lives I and II
  • NJ State Library grant recipient
  • Researching Civil War burials in Lawnside, NJ

Jordan is also a former president of the African American Genealogy Group in Philadelphia, a past board member of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, and a member of the faculty at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research.
