Anderson was one of the most celebrated singers of the 20^th century.  Despite experiencing discrimination and racism, Anderson built a successful career in which she performed in some of the most prestigious venues in the world.  She also was a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Committee and a goodwill ambassador for the United States Department of State.
