Teachers of 6th-12th graders are invited to the National History Day Philly Kick-Off on Tuesday, October 13 at HSP.  National History Day (NHD) is a great program to help students in grades 6-12 practice research and critical thinking skills, elements important to their future in the workplace and school.  This workshop is for teachers who have worked with the NHD program before as well as those who would like to learn about it for the first time. 

Workshop activities will be geared to differing levels of prior experience with NHD, and teachers will learn what  NHD is as well as how it aligns with Pennsylvania Core Standards. Representatives from over twenty of Philadelphia’s cultural institutions will share their resources for student research and there will be examples of past student projects to inspire involvement.

For the fifth year in a row, HSP will be hosting the citywide kick-off program for NHD Philly, thanks to the generous support of the Beneficial Foundation.

In support of this year's NHD theme of "Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History," HSP's Alicia Parks and Sarah Duda take a look at five individuals and stories from our collections - including a captive of the Barbary pirates, Arctic explorers, suffragettes, and much more!
