The following correspondence took place between Richard D. Bayly, a slaveholder in Virgina, and the PAS. Bayly wished to free his slaves and sought aid from the PAS to do so. The PAS committee charged with Bayly's case did not appear to think that they could offer assistance. Bayly, disappointed but still hopeful that the PAS would help, responded, "The Accountability (in a Religious view) that would rest upon the members of the Abolition Society for not acceding to the proposals I have made is not for me to determine."
