Etching

From the collection of the Library of Congress

Originally published in volume 43 of The London Magazine, this political cartoon depicts a half-nude American Indian woman as America, being assaulted by three English politicians amidst the “Boston Tea Party" turmoil. The illustration symbolizes Great Britain forcing itself on the autonomy of the American colonies. Meanwhile, the white female figure of Britannia turns away, shielding her face.
