Call No. Am 1764 Fra
In this pamphlet, Benjamin Franklin condemns the Paxton Boys as “Christian White Savages.” Comparing them to “ancient Heathens,” “cold-blooded Turks,” “Popish Spaniards,” and “Pagan Negro[es],” Franklin uses racist stereotypes in order to elevate the peaceful Susquehannock, who are “in need of protection,” and to scold the Scotch-Irish frontiersmen. “[The Susquehannock] would even have been safer among the Negroes of Africa, where at least one manly Soul would have been found, with Sense, Spirit and Humanity enough, to stand in their Defence.”
