This photo from HSP’s archives depicts skaters enjoying some time on an icy Schuylkill River in 1913. Near what historic landmark are they skating?

Answer: Boathouse Row

Located on the east bank of the Schuylkill River, Boathouse Row is home to thirteen rowing clubs and the nation’s oldest amateur sporting association, the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia. Originally founded in 1858,  the Navy operates houses #2-#14 of Boathouse Row. The Sedgeley Club runs the Turtle Rock lighthouse which is located at Boathouse #15. In the 1800s, the Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society took up residence in one of the houses. Though its name suggests that it might have rescued animals, the “humane” aspect of the club involved saving individuals who had fallen through the ice while skating. Today the skating club is located in Ardmore.  Boathouse Row became a permanent national landmark recognized by the National register of Historic Places in 1987. Most of the buildings, though restored, remain as they had been built over 100 years ago.
