Come to one - or all - in February and March. HSP has partnered with organizations around Philadelphia to present a series of programs that illuminate African America history and relate it to current events.
Created Equal? is a film and discussion series linking historical events to current events - from pre-Civil War abolition to black convict labor, the Loving court case, and Freedom Riders. Excellent chance for secondary students to engage in civic dialogue and learn history at the same time. Programs are held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays, February 12 and 26 and March 12 and 26. All are free. Teachers may receive Act 48 credit. Teachers attending the February programs will receive a $5 discount on the February 28 teacher workshop.
HSP and the Library Company of Philadelphia will offer a special teacher workshop highlighting African American activism and the new exhibit The Genius of Freedom on February 28. Enjoy a lunch speaker and leave with lots of take-home classroom material. Act 48 credit also available.
The Created Equal film discussions series commemorates the 150th anniversary of the 13th Amendment by opening discussion on whether an amendment, or any legislation, can create equality. Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle is made possible through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
