As part of our fall programming commemorating the 30th anniversary of the closing of Pennhurst State School and Hospital (November 1987), a state-funded and managed institution for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, HSP is offering a Teacher Workshop and educational resources. 

At this three-hour workshop, teachers will learn about the history of civil rights for people with disabilities, examining primary sources that can be used to raise understanding of the subject within the classroom.  Then we will take part in a panel of participant-experts who will lead a discussion of Pennhurst's place in the history of disability rights and public policy.  Each participant is affiliated with the Pennhurst Memorial and Preservation Alliance.   After the discussion, teachers will share ideas for integrating the information into their curriculum and leave with copies of the Fall 2017 Pennsylvania Legacies on the history of disabilities and the October 2017 Pennsylvania Magazine for History and Biography on the history of education.
