Applications are now being accepted for History Makers Summer Camp, an innovative educational experience for high school students that uses history to motivate greater interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This two week long, non-residential camp is offered at no cost to accepted participants and participants will receive a weekly stipend for their participation.

 

Participants will research, analyze, and produce content for a walking tour mobile app that focuses on Philadelphia’s role in the struggle for freedom and equality from the Abolition Movement to the Civil Rights Era. Participants will perform primary research using HSP’s collections and other important repositories, experience some of the city’s prominent landmarks and museums, and tie all of this content together into a mobile app to produce a new walking tour of historic Philadelphia. The program will run July 15 to July 26, 2019. Students will engage in activities from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (1300 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA), and lunch is provided periodically for the program. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from HSP.

 

Applications require three components: short answer responses written by the student, a transcript (official or unofficial) and a letter of recommendation from a school faculty member, administrator, or other professional.
