Genealogy: A Personal Appoach to History

Do you use family history in your classroom as a way of personalizing history lessons?  Or do you, the teacher, want to create your own family tree outside of the classroom?  Either way, HSP has many resources for you.

If you choose the red "Genealogists & Family Historians" box on our home page, you will be guided to the resources.  Here we promote our spring and fall series of genealogy workshops, give you a quick link to the "Roots and Branches" blog, and link to an essay about how to get started.  The first link at the top of the page - Genealogical Resources -  goes to a page that tells you about he kinds of records we have that can be used in doing family history.  There are also two other particular services to point out:  Research-by-mail whereby you pay us to do the searching through our sources and free use of Ancestry.com for our members.

Share with us how you use family history in the classroom.  Do any of these resources help?  What new ones could you use?

Looking for my grandfather's siblings and parents. Germans. Where do I start. Any Baierliens, or even close sounding please let me hear from you. I think they may have originated in Bavaria. Great Grandfather, maybe John, was born approx. 1829. Great grandmother, maybe Margarete was born in Ierland about the same time, 1926-1929

Our family has been researching Montgomery ancesters for several years. We always get stuck when we get to our great-great grandfather, Shadrack Montgomery. He was born in 1790 in Chester Co. Pennsylvania, served in the war of 1812 under the name of Montgomery or Springer(step-fathers name). We have not been able to find his parents names, only "Montgomery and Mrs. Montgomery" born in Chester Co., Pa. in 1764 and 1770. Any help at all would be deeply appreciated.

My great-great grandmother Marie Lubitz lived in New York City(1900 Federal census), but I have an original July 1904 document from Belvue Cemetery in Philadelphia where she died and is buried.(the cemetery was moved in the 1950's) I would like to know where I can purchase a death certificate for her. Thank you.
