For more than 300 years, Philadelphia and India have been connected through trade and cultural exchange. Join HSP on Wednesday, July 6, from 4-8 p.m. for a traditional Indian art demonstration, exploring this connection through the work of two world-renowned artisans:
Arun Pal, potter
Pal comes from a family of potters in a traditional potters’ village. He apprenticed at the Craft Council of West Bengal before showcasing his work around India, and he has won a number of awards, including:
• Best India Potters Award from Ulsan International Onaggi Competition
• Best Terracotta Designer in India from the British Museum
Pal has also been commissioned to send 50,000 teacups to Korea for an Earthenware event.
Bina Dey, embroiderer
Dey trained at the Craft Council of West Bengal and has been doing Kantha embroidery for almost 20 years. Her work has been shown across the world, including:
• Delhi
• Mumbai
• Bangalore
• Santa Fe
• Philadelphia
Dey was also the winner of the Indian National Award for her craft in 2014.
