Due to construction and other factors, Chinatown’s borders had been eroding for decades. When the original plan for the Vine Street expressway threatened to further encroach into the community, organizations such as the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation and Yellow Seeds answered in protest. Drawing on tactics deployed by the civil rights and antiwar movements, the activists succeeded in having the plan for the expressway altered. Residents of Chinatown continue to face the same geographic challenges today. See Kathryn E. Wilson, “Same Struggle, Same Fight”: Yellow Seeds and the Asian American Movement in Philadelphia’s Chinatown.”
