Political cartoons have played a vibrant role facilitating public dialogue throughout American history. From Benjamin Franklin’s “Join, or Die” snake to the widely syndicated Brother Jonathan character, cartoonists have used caricature and symbolism to capture the political and social climate they inhabited. This election night, join a panel discussion at HSP to learn more about this vivid history while checking out cartoons pulled from the HSP archives.
HSP is pleased to present its new document display, Wake Up: Black Theatre. Curated by Tauheed J. Alim with funding from the Arts Intern program at the Studio Institute, it uses HSP’s collection of theatre documents and ephemera to trace the history of Black-led theatre in the United States from the 19th century through the late 20th century.
Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of Dr. John Fryer. The riveting testimony of John E. Fryer, M.D., led to the declassification of homosexuality as a mental illness by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). In honor of the dedication of this historic marker, HSP will have original documents on display from the Fryer collection for one day only.
The marker will be dedicated in a ceremony on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 from 1 - 1:30 p.m. Dedication will take place on 13th and Locust Streets, diagonal from HSP.
The Historical Society of Pennsylvania is pleased to announce its fall 2017 season of programs. From September through November, HSP will host lectures, panels and other programs that showcase the range and depth of the HSP collection.
Including workshops that teach participants vital genealogical research skills, as well as informational seminars on topics ranging from Quaker abolitionist Warner Mifflin to the role of a Philadelphia institution in the disability rights movement, the fall 2017 suite of activities embodies the credo of HSP: Make History Yours.
