The sound of music, from city's earliest days
Often thought of as the last bastions of hush, libraries are louder than one might have heard. So tune in and listen closely to Philadelphia's 300-plus-year musical legacy. Forsaking it in their religious services and sneering at it in their private lives, the Quaker founders of Philadelphia were a decidedly unmusical bunch. Fortunately for future ears, other religious and ethnic groups were counted among the city's early settlers, many with active musical traditions - and instruments - in tow. Sunday, 2/21/16 9:33 am

Memories & Melodies
Listen close: Libraries are louder than you’ve heard. Sitting silent in the stacks and vaults are the booming soundscapes of the past: scores of sheet music, recordings, concert posters, songbooks, and more. Get noisy in the library this spring as the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) plugs into Philadelphia’s roaring history with a chorus of public programs. Thursday, 1/7/16 1:34 pm

An Artist Embedded
The Historical Society of Pennsylvania will collaborate with playwright and artist Ain Gordon to explore the intersections of history and contemporary life. Titled An Artist Embedded, Gordon will take the traditional “artist in residence” to the next level by becoming part of HSP’s programs development team over the next two years. This project is made possible by a grant from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Thursday, 8/28/14 4:34 pm

An Artist Embedded
When we look back, we cannot know ALL that happened. The historical record is rarely, if ever, complete. When we present history, we fill in the gaps, create the voices that spoke, the characters that lived. Are we creating fiction? Have we made history un-true? Or have we created a truth greater than mere fact? Thursday, 8/28/14 4:32 pm
