New Document Display Explores PHL's 300+ Year Musical Legacy

Tuesday, February 23, 2016

"Get loud" is perhaps the advice least expected to leave a librarian's lips. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania's (HSP) latest document display, Memories & Melodies, invites the public to do just that: to turn up the volume on a segment of Philadelphia's musical legacy long muted.

From the mystic Johannes Kelpius and the first documented musical performance in Philadelphia, to the Balch sheet music collection of 19th century parlor songs, through American Bandstand and "The Sound of Philadelphia", Memories & Melodies features materials from more than 300 years of the city's music history.

HSP's document displays are free and open to the public during regular business hours.

Memories & Melodies is a part of HSP's four-part program series by the same name. Click here or visit hsp.org/Music to learn more and to register.
