This beginner workshop will provide novice genealogists with the tools and knowledge they need to begin their family history search. Learn the proper way to conduct family interviews and review family records. Find out what resources are available and how best to use them, including public records, federal and local repositories, historical societies, ancestral DNA testing, and genealogical databases.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania has partnered with the Arthur Ross Gallery to present the exhibition West Philadelphia: Building a Community. The exhibition, which runs through October 11, explores the 19th-century architectural and urban development of West Philadelphia, as well as the highlights of today’s dynamic, multicultural community. Featured in the exhibit are more than a dozen watercolors from HSP’s collection by self-taught artist David J. Kennedy. Join us for a members-only lecture presented by Dr. Jeffrey Cohen of Bryn Mawr College, followed by a members’ reception.

The Multicultural Collaborative at Drexel University invites you to a lecture and dialogue with Professor Scott Kurashige. Kurashige, a professor at the University of Michigan, is an award-winning historian and community organizer. His book, The Shifting Grounds of Race: Black and Japanese Americans in the Making of Multiethnic Los Angeles, received the American Historical Association’s 2008 Albert J. Beveridge Award “for the best book in English on the history of the United States, Latin America, or Canada from 1492 to the present.”

Join us for the opening preview of the India Merchants exhibit. Featuring a lecture by Susan S. Bean, author of Yankee India: American Commercial and Cultural Encounters with India in the Age of Sail 1784-1860 and curator of South Asian and Korean Art at the Peabody Essex Museum.
