Lecture/Panel Discussion

Following HSP’s annual general meeting, the Historical Society will display the recently preserved journal of William Still, the “Father of the Underground Railroad.” The journal was preserved and digitized thanks to a generous donation from The Penn Towne Chapter of The Links, Inc. Guests can view the original journal and its detailed descriptions of the fugitive slaves who traveled through Philadelphia.

Genealogy Workshop

HSP is the largest genealogy center in the Mid-Atlantic region, with records from every state east of the Mississippi River. Learn more about the expansive resources available at the historical society, including deeds, probate records, church records, ship passenger lists, and newspapers from 18th- and 19th-century Pennsylvania. This workshop is aimed at beginners, but there will also be useful tips for experienced researchers.

Genealogy Workshop

This beginner workshop will provide novice genealogists with the tools and knowledge they need to begin their family history search. Learn the proper way to conduct family interviews and review family records. Find out what resources are available and how best to use them, including public records, federal and local repositories, historical societies, ancestral DNA testing, and genealogical databases.

This is one in a five-part series of free lectures related to the exhibition West Philadelphia: Building a Community, which is on display at the Arthur Ross Gallery through October 11.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania has partnered with the Arthur Ross Gallery to present the exhibition West Philadelphia: Building a Community. The exhibition, which runs through October 11, explores the 19th-century architectural and urban development of West Philadelphia, as well as the highlights of today’s dynamic, multicultural community. Featured in the exhibit are more than a dozen watercolors from HSP’s collection by self-taught artist David J. Kennedy. Join us for a members-only lecture presented by Dr. Jeffrey Cohen of Bryn Mawr College, followed by a members’ reception.

Workshop

As many small historical societies do not have an in-house conservator, this workshop will introduce archivists to conservation basics. Learn how to identify materials and make minor repairs. The three-hour course will also address adhesive basics, housing materials, and tape and mold issues. Participants will receive a take-home tool kit, including a micro spatula, water brush, chemical sponge, bone folder, pH test pen, and paper samples. The workshop will be taught by Tara O'Brien, director of preservation and conservation at HSP.

The Multicultural Collaborative at Drexel University invites you to a lecture and dialogue with Professor Scott Kurashige. Kurashige, a professor at the University of Michigan, is an award-winning historian and community organizer. His book, The Shifting Grounds of Race: Black and Japanese Americans in the Making of Multiethnic Los Angeles, received the American Historical Association’s 2008 Albert J. Beveridge Award “for the best book in English on the history of the United States, Latin America, or Canada from 1492 to the present.”

Bean, author of Yankee India: American Commercial and Cultural Encounters with India in the Age of Sail 1784-1860 and curator of South Asian and Korean Art at the Peabody Essex Museum. Followed by an Indian music performance and a cocktail reception. Cosponsored by the Council of Indian Organizations in Greater Philadelphia.
